Explain rewards clearly to customers

Earning and spending rewards

What to say when somebody joins, and the one thing the card does not say for you.

The card carries your reward wording and the count, and that is all it carries. Anything else a customer needs to know has to come from you.

The three sentences

  • "Scan that code and you get a card on your phone."
  • "Show it whenever you come in and I will stamp it."
  • "At nine stamps, your tenth is free."

That is the whole pitch. It works because it says what they do, what you do, and what they get, in that order.

The thing the card does not say

The Offer tab has a Terms and conditions box. It is stored against your Program, but it is not printed on the card, the sign-up page or the wallet pass, so a customer will never read it there. If a condition really matters, say it when they join and put it on your counter sign or your website.

Worth saying out loud

  • One stamp per what: per visit, per transaction, or per item.
  • Whether the reward can be used the same day it is earned.
  • That a full card does not have to be spent on the spot. When that card is full they can spend the reward or bank it for later, and it waits until they ask for it.
  • Anything the reward does not cover.

Say the same thing every time. Most complaints about loyalty schemes are not about the offer, they are about two members of staff explaining it differently.

Still stuck?

If none of this covers it, send us a message and a person will reply. Tell us what you were doing when it went wrong, and we can usually sort it in one message.

So we can reply. We use it for nothing else.

Optional. Handy if it is quicker to talk it through.

A few words, such as: stamps not showing on a card.

What you were doing, what you expected, and what happened instead.
